Tutoring has made a difference in my own family in that they are more accepting of others and now volunteering at various organizations themselves.

My children often went with me to tutor, and I think they have developed a breadth of experience with people of other races/backgrounds that has helped them to interact with people different from themselves.

My adult children have heard my stories and have impressed upon their children how hard life would be if they couldn't read.

I think I have made a difference when I see a woman who, a year ago, did not recognize her own name, reading to her young granddaughter.

My student and his wife moved to the U.S. in 2005 from Pakistan.

Two years ago, my student (then age 35) could only recognize seven words.

My student spoke hardly a word of English, and was terrified to go anywhere because she could not speak the language.

My student moved here from Montreal, Canada, with her husband and two children.

My student was interested in getting his Commercial Drivers License (CDL). His situation was that he had been driving tractor trailers for a company, but without his CDL, and he didn't want to continue to drive illegally, even though his boss knew that he had been.

I can't imagine how frightening it must be for a person who can't navigate language (written and spoken) on a daily basis.
