Provider News: Tompkins Learning Partners

Tue, Mar 14th 2017 04:00 pm

Join us March 18th at 2pm in Boynton Middle School for an afternoon of friendly competition and your chance to win a bucket of prizes including a year's subscription to the New York Times daily crossword, a plaque bearing your name, and more! There will be three levels of competition, so no need to be an expert to enter! Play by yourself or gather a team of up to 4 people! Enter a silent auction and enjoy light refreshments, too!

This is a donate-what-you-will event, and all proceeds will benefit TLP and adult literacy across Tompkins County. So bring friends and family of all ages to have a great time and help your neighbors!

Online registration closes after March 10th, so reserve your spot now, or arrive at 1pm on the 18th to register in person. Register online by clicking the "Crossword" button in the upper right hand corner of www.tlpartners.org.

Since 1976, Tompkins Learning Partners has been providing tutoring services, free of charge, to local residents who need help reading, writing, or speaking English. These services are provided through the many dedicated volunteer tutors who give their time to make a difference in students' lives. The knowledge that students gain allows them to function better in our community, obtain or improve their employment, or continue their education by going on to attend college.

Each year over 100 students and tutors work together under our auspices to make student's educational goals happen. In 2015, 86 volunteer tutors donated 6,926 hours of their time to their students. It is easy to see that the strength of Tompkins Learning Partners is the volunteers. A dedicated staff provides support to both students and volunteer tutors to ensure that both groups get the help they need to succeed.

Funds to provide these services are from grants awarded by Tompkins County and the City of Ithaca, the New York State Education Department, United Way of Tompkins County, and local foundations. Individual donations, donations from organizations, and special fundraising events also help us to keep our doors open.
