General Description of Responsibilities: 

Plans, implements, and manages educational programs for adult learners working at a basic or intermediate literacy level.  Recruits, trains, and coordinates volunteers who deliver instruction to adult students seeking to improve their reading, writing, math, computer, or other literacy skills.  Coordinates instructional programs tailored to students’ individual goals.  Assists students in setting and achieving their own self-determined learning goals.  Administers educational assessments, makes referrals, and conducts community outreach, marketing, and advocacy for the agency and its students.

 

Examples of Specific Duties: 

 

1.  Student Case Management:  Recruits, assesses, and orients prospective students.  Primarily assigns students to a volunteer tutor, but may teach or co-teach when needed.  Informs students about additional learning opportunities and provides on-going support to ensure that students have the educational resources needed to reach their goals.  Provides case management for each student, including annual formal check-ins and assessments using the TABE.  Responsible for matching students with volunteer tutors, making appropriate referrals, and maintaining up-to-date student records.

 

2.  Volunteer Recruitment and Training:  Recruits, screens, trains, and supervises volunteers for jobs as tutors or administrative/office/library assistants.  Designs and presents learning materials used in volunteer training sessions.  Provides a consistent recruitment message and promptly responds to inquiries from prospective volunteers.

 

3.  Volunteer Management:  Coordinates matches between students and tutors.  Provides continuing support, training, and supervision for volunteers.  Helps students and volunteers set goals and assess progress.  Keeps accurate records and collects statistical data for reports.  Advises students and volunteers on ways to overcome obstacles to learning.  Organizes and teaches professional development workshops for volunteers. 

 

4.  Community Outreach:  Speaks to community groups with the dual purposes of recruiting volunteers and students.  Networks with community agencies to encourage appropriate referrals, with particular attention directed towards rural outreach in surrounding Tompkins County municipalities.  Performs direct and indirect community outreach and education to increase awareness of literacy needs in our community.  Increases the visibility of the agency and its work via social media, press releases and letters to the editor, tabling at community events, and other modes of community awareness and promotion.  Responsible for training and coordinating volunteers to support outreach efforts and perform these functions.

 

5.  Program Development:  Develops instructional resources and identifies books and other resources needed for the library.  Participates in grant writing opportunities and reports outcomes and other required information to funders. Attends professional development training and staff meetings, and participates in setting and attaining organizational goals. 

 

6.  Performs other duties as required.

 

 

Skills/Educational Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Reading, Adult Education or related field.  Master’s degree preferred.
  • Very strong teaching skills, NYS Certification preferred.
  • Successful experience teaching adults with basic skill levels.
  • Training, supervision, and program development experience preferred.
  • Ability to work respectfully with adults from diverse backgrounds.
  • Respect for and understanding of the many cultures of local residents.
  • Commitment to student-centered adult education.
  • Ability to travel, with access to own vehicle.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to organize work and keep accurate records.
  • Proficient with MS Office Programs, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Proficient with social media use:  Facebook, Twitter and website

 

Working Hours: M-F from 9:00 to 4:30 with occasional nights and weekends.

Wage: “Living wage” +
