Board Development

Literacy New York offers non-profit board development, technical assistance, and workshops in the following areas:

Affiliate Board Development Workshops — workshops are available based upon affiliate and/or LNY request.

Board Orientation — understanding the board role and responsibilities; differentiating between board and staff functions; the role of LNY in providing literacy services in the community.

Affiliate Board Consultations — A limited number of individual board consultants are available as part of the LNY annual, regional technical assistance program; consultations scheduled upon affiliate and/or LNY request. Format includes LNY staff participating in a regularly scheduled board meeting, committee meeting, or in a nontraditional format to discuss a variety of organizational concerns.

Building Better Boards Initiative

Literacy New York’s Building Better Boards Initiative will enhance the leadership, governance and service delivery of the 41 local literacy organizations in New York through a comprehensive board self assessment process.

Building Better Boards Project Goals:

  • promote the understanding of the need for effective nonprofit board governance in the local literacy organizations (41 network affiliates) throughout New York.
  • build on the LNY State Board’s own board self assessment process; build on LNY’s exemplary work, continue to strengthen LNY’s governance practices and serve as the leader and governance model for the affiliates throughout the state.
  • provide the opportunity for local literacy affiliates in New York to assess their effectiveness and capacity—with a special goal of maximizing the number of organizations participating in the Board self-assessment. This will be accomplished over a three year process.
  • present and discuss emerging insights, promising practices and related options in governance so that Literacy New York leaders can understand, strategize and decide on optimum governance practices and programs that build capacity for their own organization.
