Making a Difference
Tutor Stories From Across New York State

Volunteers (tutors, intake and assessment coordinators, tutor trainers, and office administrators) are an essential part of every Literacy New York affiliate. After completing a professional training program, tutors are matched with adult learners and meet with them several hours weekly at libraries, community centers and other public locations.

Many tutors, like Hattie Conner, believe they have “found their destiny,” take great pride in their tutoring job and the fact that they can “make a difference.”   Here are some of their stories:

Hattie Conner – Literacy Volunteers of Wayne Co., Lyons

Gus Walker – Literacy Buffalo

Nelsie Aybar-Grau, Jackie Schechter, Doris Easton – Ulster Literacy, Kingston

Don and Sandra – Literacy Volunteers of Broome/ Tioga Co., Endicott

Clifton Duval – Literacy Northern NY, Watertown
